B-Movie Buffet: Day of the Dead

Prologue:

Spawned from an earlier outing to see “Hobo With a Shotgun” and enlivened by an intense bowl of noodles, I thought it was time to create my own dishes to go with a few hit flicks that stoked the bubbling cauldron of movies condemned to the mainstream masses shit-list. Dishes paired with the energy of the film- a taste of the action, a slurp of the sensational and a bite of the best B movies out there(or at least in my archive). Now there is great debate as to what makes a film a B movie. In my eyes it has to be a cult classic, something that was never a huge cinema hit, or in general was not highly regarded by the contemporary cinema going audience. Mainly a mixed bag of thrillers, sci-fi and horror, they are prized by a select awesome few. As the articles roll out you’ll get the idea.

The Movie: Day of the Dead
It’s time to resurface after the festive season, time to re-animate and make more food and watch more crazy flicks. Day of the Dead resonates with survivalist fans and people that geek out on post-apocalyptic scenarios. If you throw in some zombies, all the better. Humans fight amongst themselves and the zombies benefit from the always fallible nature of the number one predator on the planet. Not even a bunker complex can keep these guys safe. Supplies as always in this situation are limited. You will unfortunately be eating for the most part from cans and jarred goods.

The king of the can in most peoples opinion would be ‘spam’. Here the glorious hero of the canned meat world is brought back to life by getting the fried treatment. The jar of pickles your grandma gave you would come a might bit handy right now. Luckily scallions seem to grow like weeds around the helo pad, and while re-fueling the chopper, there is just enough time to grill them whole. Later, down below, chop them up and mix them with a bag of long-life sour cream. Home-made brioche buns straight from the oven, spread with a little butter complete the fried spam sandwich. I can’t complain now, but if you could see the mountain of spam we have to get through, we are going to need to get a little bit creative with the menu.

Any suggestions?- “G.N.”
