Night Shift Survival

You’re at the tail end of a night shift, the body is drained. Every movement has to be calculated. Colours have become saturated and a unique vibrancy is shimmering above the physical surface of every object. You need something to keep you hanging in there until you can clock off and conk out. In my hyper-real state, the image of a tostada blessed with scrambled eggs nurtured itself in my mind. At first a vague outline, but as the hours ticked away– a ranchera salsa was included; the eggs now contained torn ham, strips of poblano and a dollop of crème fraiche. A garnish of chopped coriander and slices of radish completed the final construct. Now fully realized, a solid framework for the brain to latch onto; work was but a immaterial expression of movement and protocol.
