Later that Night…..

We ate fine fish at Kødbyens Fiskebar in the old meatpacking district. Danish Limfjorden oysters – the first day of the season for these meaty suckers. The restaurant in a celebratory mood, gave out glasses of complimentary oyster wine, i.e. Muscadet with each order.

It had been a while… Mussels never charmed me so much, but tonight the vibe was right and the Blue Mussels from the same region as the oysters, did not make me clam up in any way. On the contrary, they were steamed in apple cider and herbs; the empty shells soon piled up.

You want your fish wet and still shimmering. The dark atmospheric lights of this hip restaurant did not stop the psychedelic light reflections emanating from the skin of my lush, oil rich mackerel. It was accompanied by sea weed, sorrel, egg yolk cream and the now, habitual new nordic pickled root veg. The dish beautiful, almost a still life of the aquatic.

I left humbled by things plucked from the sea. “G.N.”

    that mackerel looks out of this world…and those mussels sound amazing, apple cider sounds like a pretty perfect steam-bath for mussels but I never thought of it before
